Andrew Gross House, 140 East Fountain Avenue - C.1856

Andrew Gross built the house for John R. Wright in 1855. Originally this house had a broad veranda across the front. During the Civil War, the barn or carriage house served as a temporary hiding place for two Confederate soldiers. Unknown to Mrs. Wright, they were hidden inside the barn by two Village boys. When they were discovered, she fed them until they were able to move on. In 1935, this carriage house, located at 930 Laurel Avenue, was converted to a seven room house. An addition was made to the residence when it was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Barnard. The Architect was A. C. Denison.
