Samuel Allen House, 25 West Fountain Avenue - c.1859

This house was built for Samuel Badger Allen, whose father Marston was a signer of the Village’s Articles of Incorporation. Architects were Walter and Wilson. The house is built of ashlar and blue limestone with the addition of a butlers pantry and 2 bathrooms around 1900. In 1992, a tunnel which led to the house known as the “Pillars” at 780 Congress was filled in. There is an underground room on the corner of Congress and West Fountain on this property. The existence of this tunnel and room suggest a probable association with the underground railroad.
