Roland W. Richardson was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Signal Corp. Aviation Section, which soon became the Air Service, in France from 15 July 1917 to 31 December 1918. He received all of his flying training and WWI flying experience in France during that time.

Before entering the service he was a student at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio.
